Brilliant film. Among my favourite three interpretations of the post-Godfather Pacino. The other two being De Palma's Carlito's Way (1993) and Mann's Heat (1995).
It's also my favourite role for Johnny Depp, even though I haven't seen Dead Man yet.

Today, among other things, I paid extra attention to Gary Oldman. After the first time I saw this movie, I was surprised to find out that one of the actors who had been on the screen for quite some time was actually Gary Oldman: I had not recognized him, even though I thought I knew his face well. Today it was almost fascinating to realize that a pair of (fake?) mustache, a pair of glasses and a certain hairstyle could tranform a face beyond recognition. And this thought brought back to mind another role which Gary Oldman played without being recognizable: the rich Mason Verger in Ridley Scott's Hannibal (2001). And while my mind was wandering between these two films, there it happens on the screen: the Joker threatens another villain to cut his face and feed it to the villain's dogs. That is the same way Mason Verger had become disfigured: he had cut his face and fed it to his own dogs ("It seemed like a good idea at the time").
To note also a tiny cameo of Cillian Murphy: was his part meant to be bigger and ended up on the floor of the editing room?

This morning, among the people watching the movie - Dublin, Ireland, CineWorld Cinema, Screen 10, 11am - I noticed a particularly high number of folks who were clearly overweight. More than usual, I believe. And I couldn't help thinking that most of the audience were fans of the TV serial, which means long time sitting on the couch watching telly, eating junk,... Mmm, that could be.
I am 37 years old and I have never watched a single episode.
Nothing worth noting on the film. I still can't understand though how two people who are not agents anymore, who have been knowing each other and working together for years keep calling each other by family names. Even while kissing. Even in bed. Try it with your partner, if you can. Without laughing that is.
A very special film
What is the best film I have ever seen? No doubt: Fellini's 8 1/2. Would I watch it every day? Probably not. Are there other films I love? Tens and tens of them. Would I watch any of them every day? Probably not ... except Fred Zinnemann's The Day of the Jackal (1973). This is a marvellous film I keep going back to, again and again. Whenever I want to watch something, but I can't decide what, when there is nothing that is appealing enough, I can always turn to The Day of the Jackal and watch it and enjoy it as it were for the first time. Roger Ebert ends his 4-star review of this film with this sentence:
"There are some words you hesitate to use in a review, because they sound so much like advertising copy, but in this case I can truthfully say that the movie is spellbinding."
He is absolutely right.
